The Northern Territory Government will invest $5 million in fishing infrastructure around the Territory in 2009/10, part of that funding will be the $4 million upgrade for the Palmerston Boat Ramp.

Today the Government announced it will establish a Working Group to consult with the community about the proposed upgrade.

The Minister for Fisheries, Kon Vatskalis, said discussions with the public will begin next month for a four week period.

“Fishing is an important part of our great lifestyle and this Government is working hard to make it even better,” said Mr Vatskalis.

“The $4 million upgrade of the Palmerston Boat Ramp is an important election commitment we will commence work on in the next financial year.

“It is a very popular launch with Top End fishermen so it is vital we get their feedback on the proposed upgrade.”

The Minister said the upgrade will include:

  • A security compound – similar to Buffalo Creek;
  • Floating pontoon – making it easier for families to go fishing;
  • Security lighting; and
  • Power and Water to the ramp

"I have also asked that land based fishing opportunities be looked at for those without a boat”, said Mr Vatskalis.

The Minister said the Government has also committed to $1 million for fishing infrastructure improvements around the Territory.

“The Fishing Access Working Group is working on the priorities already identified by the fishing fraternity to determine where the money will best be spent.”
